The Lighthouse
Director Robert Eggers (The VVitch) chose Yarmouth and Cape Forchu here in Nova Scotia as the perfect place to shoot this dark and stormy tale of two men stationed on an off-shore lighthouse for 4 weeks in the late 1890’s. Over the course of the time they spend together they descend into a maelstrom of terror and madness. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson both deliver Oscar calibre performances alongside stunning B&W cinematography that beautifully captures the punishing weather of the Atlantic coast. Eggers is making films that are being compared to Bergman, Tarkovsky and Lynch and with this only his second feature, we appear to be witness to the birth of a new cinema “auteur”. The Lighthouse is unlike anything you have ever seen, and you are certain to never forget it. As the tagline states, “there is enchantment in the light”.
